Openness & Opacity Explained

Solar shades offer a range of opacity levels, spanning from 1% to 14% openness. But what does this actually signify?  A shade with 1% openness will effectively shield 99% of harmful UV rays, while a 14% openness shade will block 86%, with variations in between. In simple terms, the lower the percentage, the denser the fabric weave, resulting in reduced light penetration.

Opacity tells the degree of tightness/looseness of our custom solar shade’s fabric weave that’s “open” to allow filtered light, view, and daylight control.

Solar Roller Shades vs Traditional Blinds

While traditional blinds offer adjustable light control and more privacy in a room, they do not filter UV rays as effectively as solar roller shades. Our solar screen shades for large windows filter out harsh rays, heat & glare while preserving your view. So, they are a better option for sun-exposed windows, patios, and sliding glass doors. When it comes to blackout shades, they completely block light for total darkness.

Another alternative to solar shades is a solar screen. While a solar screen is a fixed mesh material installed on the exterior of the window, a solar shade offers retractability, as it can be raised or lowered like blinds. For more information, read solar screens vs solar shades.

Why Choose our Premium Roll Up Solar Shades

Block UV Rays & Glare

  • Protect your furniture, floors, and paintings in your living room from discoloration due to sun damage.
  • Reduce glare on screens in your home office, media room, or home theater.

Design Tip

Based on our customer survey, homeowners looking for the highest level of fade-protection & privacy, select our roller solar shades for windows with 1% openness. A very tight weave provides 99% sun protection. When coupled with darker fabric colors (ebony pearl, charcoal, chocolate), the performance will be even better, as darker-colored fabrics effectively absorb UV light. However, this design option will ‘cloud’ the exterior view.

See without Being Seen!

  • Preserve a soft, crisp view of the outdoors without letting people on the outside see in.
  • Choose a fabric with medium openness factor (7% to 10%) to clearly see outside without being seen yourself (during the day).
  • Install them in your bathroom or bedroom.

All-Purpose Light Regulation

  • Based on your needs for visibility and brightness, block any amount of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, from 86% to 99%.
  • Get ample (filtered) natural light (14% openness) or gently diffused light glow (10% openness) or nearly totally darken the space (1% openness).
  • They offer an all-purpose light control solution for the windows of commercial, retail, and residential buildings.

Heat & Sound Insulation

Choose a tightly woven custom sun fabric roller shades to repel maximum heat and outside noise (if your window faces a busy street), creating a peaceful environment to study or sleep.

Reduce Energy Costs

  • At affordableblinds.com, rolling out sun shades for patios and other spaces will increase your home's thermal performance in both hotter and colder months, cutting down on your energy bills year-round.
  • In summer, they’ll prevent solar heat from entering your room and, in winter, they’ll prevent warmth from escaping, saving you on cooling & heat costs, respectively.

Start Customizing our Solar Blinds for Windows

  • Opacity: Choose 1%, 3%, 5%, 10%, or 14% openness percentage. 1% openness will block out 99% of the UV rays, while 14% will provide 86% sun control.
  • Roll Style: Choose a standard (traditional) way to roll your shade up the back of the roller for more insulation. Or let the fabric wrap over the top roll to create a waterfall effect.
  • Size: Treat all windows, from extra small (15 x 24”) to extra-large (115 x 108”)
  • Color: White, ivory, silver, ecru, chocolate, charcoal, etc. A lighter color (like white) will create more brightness while a darker one (like charcoal) will provide better privacy.  (Choose one that fits your unique decor style)
  • Design: Select a modern trendy design or get a classic pattern for a traditional look.
  • Mount Style: Choose from inside, outside, flush inside mounts. Select an inside mount for these daylight control shades if your window has minimum required depth. Use light blockers to cover light gaps.

Expert Design Tip

Have a small sun-facing window in your kitchen or want to brighten up your space in the living room? Our experts highly recommend a lighter color for more brightness. If you need more glare reduction and better view-through, go with darker colors. A darker color is also a great choice for larger windows that overlook an amazing outdoor scenery.

Optional Upgrades (for an Extra Cost)

  • Motorization with Wireless Remote: Instantly position your tailor-made sun-filtering shades.
  • Smart Home Integration: Select this upgrade if you want to use your new sun filtering shades using voice commands or an app.
  • Valance: Want to cover the roller tube for a clean, modern look? Select a cassette valance with lovely fabric insert.
  • Privacy Liner: Add an opaque cloth liner for maximum privacy and a layered look. Alternatively, select blackout solar shades.
  • Light Blockers: Fill light gaps on sides for an inside mount.

Most Frequent Questions

1. Do solar roller shades work & do they reduce glare on TVs & computer screens?

Yes. Solar roller shades are excellent sun controllers. Depending on fabric openness (1%–14%), they block up to 99% of UV rays, improve daytime privacy & significantly reduce glare on TVs and computer screens. Less sun also means lower cooling costs & better indoor comfort.

2. What are the cons of solar roller shades & how do they compare to blackout shades?

While solar roller shades provide daytime privacy and UV filtering, they are made from sheer fabrics and won’t create complete darkness like blackout shades. They also allow reduced nighttime privacy when interior lights are on, so layering with curtains or blackout blinds is recommended if total coverage is needed.

3. Can you see through solar shades & what openness level is best?

During the day, solar roller shades allow you to see outside while preventing others from looking in. At night, the effect reverses. For maximum privacy and UV protection, choose a fabric low openness (1%–3%). For more natural light and clearer views, select higher openness levels (10%–14%).

4. How long do solar roller shades last & are they eco-friendly?

With proper care, high-quality solar roller shades can last 10 years or more. They’re made from durable, flame-retardant, OEKO-TEX certified fabrics with low VOC emissions, providing both longevity & an eco-friendly, healthy indoor solution.

5. Do solar shades help with energy efficiency & can they be used outdoors?

Yes. Solar roller shades lower cooling costs in summer by blocking heat and help retain warmth in winter. Many models are also designed with weather-resistant fabrics, making them suitable for outdoor areas like patios, porches & sliding glass doors.

6. Are solar shades more expensive than regular roller shades?

Yes. Due to specialized UV-blocking fabrics, solar shades generally cost more than basic roller shades. For example, a 24x36” Essential Roller Shade is about $42.05, while a comparable solar shade costs $79.43.
