How Do You Install Blackout Roller Shades?
What are the best blackout roller shades?
Blackout Roller shades are here to provide complete light-blockage while giving your home an aesthetically pleasing look. With a wide collection of blackout roller shades here at Affordable Blinds, including bold stripes, trendy tweeds, neutral solids, and fresh, funky patterns, you can find exactly what you are looking for.
Blackout roller shades excel in a number of ways, though are best for bedrooms, media rooms, or any other room that requires the elimination of sunlight completely. All the while, you get the sleek and modern look of roller blackout shades. There are plenty of lift options to choose from as well, all of which can be decorated with a custom valance.
One of the main benefits of blackout shades is that they blackout entire rooms, filtering out 100% of natural light coming from outside. Beyond that, however, there are plenty of notable blackout shade benefits that you may have never thought of or been aware of, including noise reduction and energy efficiency.
With so many excellent benefits, it is no wonder why blackout shades are such a good option for media rooms and blackout rooms. You can also use them if you want to create optimal focus in your home office or help maximize nap time in the nursery so that your little one can rest peacefully.
Here are the top three benefits of blackout shades.
Blackout shades are made to block out all forms of light, including artificial light and natural light, meaning the room that you decide to use them in will be completely dark, even when the sun is out during the brightest times of the day. If you work late nights, having blackout shades can be very helpful when trying to sleep during the day.
Blackout shades are also very popular for city dwellers, as many city apartments and homes suffer from constant exposure to street and traffic lights.
Even if you live on acres of land without any light pollution for miles, blackout blinds can be a great investment. Remember, blackout shades aren’t only for sleeping. In many cases, people will use blackout shades to enhance their media experiences during the daytime. They also reduce the accumulation of dust and can protect your precious interiors, including artwork, furniture, and flooring from fading and discoloration.
If you own a second property, the latter is very important. If your vacation home, for example, is not occupied many times during the year, you can keep your blackout shades drawn so that your interiors remain in good condition throughout the year.
Noise Reduction
If you don’t have concerns about natural light, though it is noise reduction that you are after, you’ll be happy to know that blackout shades can be extremely helpful. The dog next door might never stop barking or you might have to deal with constant sirens from a nearby police or fire station.
When it comes to sleeping, noise can be almost as disruptive, if not more disruptive, than light.
The good thing is, blackout shades are great when it comes to noise reduction. While blackout shades do not eliminate 100% of exterior noise, they can help reduce noise overall. Many blackout roller shades have been known to improve noise reduction by up to 70%!
Blackout shades can also improve the acoustics of a room, minimizing echo and reverberation, which can often be very harsh when they bounce back at you.
Improving Energy Efficiency
30% of the heat in your home is lost through your windows during the winter. During the summer, about 76% of the sunlight that hits your windows creates the heat the forces you to run your A/C. By installing high-quality blackout shades, you can mitigate this heat transfer.
The U.S. Department of Energy says that blackout shades can reduce heat loss through windows by up to 40%! This means that you could potentially see 20% in heat and A/Cl energy savings, simply by installing window treatments. Blackout shades are a bit thicker than most shades, meaning they provide more insulation. Overall, blackout shades are made to prevent hot or cold air from getting into your home from the outside.
Take a moment to calculate how much you spend every single year on heating. Next, determine what 20% of savings would look like for your bill. Blackout shades could essentially end up paying for themselves after a few years of use.
Of course, there are many blackout window treatment options, though if you are looking for something classic, sleek, and modern, blackout roller shades are a great option.
Here are the top five reasons our customers love blackout roller shades:
Classic Look
Roller shades have clean lines and a simple look, perfect for modern decor. While many might think that these shades have a “basic” look, we believe this clean look works perfectly in many situations.
If you want window treatments that aren’t going to distract from the rest of the decor you’ve worked so hard to put together, roller shades might be an excellent choice. In fact, they can even complement your decor in many ways, adding to the overall theme. Plus, with simple, clean lines, they are the most versatile window treatments on the market today.
Easy Operation
While most of our window treatments here at Affordable Blinds are easy to operate, there is something to be said about how easy it is to operate roller shades. Roller shades have been around for a long time. It is almost human nature that we know how to raise and lower them. Simply use the bottom rail and give it a light pull or small push.
Of course, we offer a wide variety of lift systems here at Affordable Blinds as well, including a motorized lift and a continuous cord loop. You can pick the lift option that works best for your needs.
Tons of Color Options
When buying blackout roller shades, you’re going to want to get a darker color. However, that doesn’t mean you have to go with black. There are plenty of unique colors to choose from here at Affordable Blinds. Roller shades provide so many different color options to choose from that it can be a bit mind-boggling. Of couse, you can easily find the right shades for your specific look, which is what makes these shades so popular in the first place.
Patterns and Textures
Is that solid, dark color a bit uninspiring to you? If so, you will probably be happy to find out that our blackout roller shades come in a wide variety of patterns and textures. If you want window treatments that can command the attention of a room, you might consider playing with the various textures available.
Easy to Maintain
With so many small pieces to worry about, blinds can be quite difficult to maintain. You must check each blade and slat for dust, dirt, grime, pet hair, or any other debris that floats around your home. Curtains can also be quite a mess, attracting tons of dust or stains. Beyond that, there are certain window treatments that require more repairs and maintenance than others too, as they are more complex. If you open and close complex window treatments on a regular basis or expose them to the elements, you might find yourself having to clean or repair them more often.
With roller shades, you get a minimalist design that makes them some of the easiest window treatments around to clean and maintain. They don’t collect much dirt or dust like other window treatments out there. Plus, with very few moving parts except for the ones that sit protected within the headrail, you don’t have a lot to worry about in terms of maintenance.
Interested in upgrading your blackout roller shades to get the most from them?
If so, you might consider some of these upgrades for added customization.
● Cordless Lift: This is the most popular feature upgrade for blackout roller shades available, as it gets rid of unsightly cords using a hidden control system. You can easily raise or lower your shades with this unique cordless lift system. The cordless lift option is a very popular choice for homes with young children or pets, as cords can be very hazardous.
● Continuous Cord Loop: This particular upgrade secures your blackout roller shades to the window frame or wall, allowing you to easily lower or raise your shades by pulling on the loop cord. If you have a large window that you want to cover with blackout roller shades, the continuous cord loop is a wonderful option.
● Valances and Cornices: If you want to accent your blackout roller shades with a stylish topper, you might consider going for a custom valance or cornice. Some of our blackout roller shades can be upgraded to a reverse roll in which the rolling mechanism for the shades is hidden, creating a cleaner, more sophisticated look.
● Motorization: Motorization is another very popular choice for modern homeowners. With a motor on your blackout roller shades, you can control how much you want to raise or lower your shades with the push of a button. Motorized roller shades work well in several situations. For example, you may want to go with motorization if you’re dealing with windows that are difficult to reach. You may also want to go with motorization if you have physical limitations that make it difficult to open and close your shades manually. Whatever the case, motorization provides added convenience that will also dazzle your home guests.
If you’re looking at getting a set of blackout roller shades for your home, you’re going to need to know how to install them. Come with us as we explore the easy steps you can take to install your own blackout roller shades without having to hire a professional!
Bracket Installation
The first thing that you will need to do is decide whether you want your blackout roller shades to sit inside the window or outside the window. These two design types are referred to as inside mount and outside mount.
When it comes to inside mounting, you will want to make sure to leave ¼” of clearance between the rolled-up shade and the top of the frame, as it will provide you with enough room to put the shade into the slotted bracket.
For outside mounting, start by holding your shade in the position you want it to sit in and use a level to make sure that it is straight. Have someone help you put pencil marks at each end of the roller shade.
Adjusting The Roller Tension
One thing you will have to do once you have your roller shades up and attached to the wall adjust the tension. If you want to tighten the tension on your shade, lower it around 18” from the top and take the window bracket down. Roll your shade up completely by hand and put the brackets back on.
If you want to loosen the tension on your shade, raise it all the way to the top and take the brackets off. Roll the shade back down until it is around 18” in length and replace the brackets.
If your shade isn’t moving up, that means that the spring is likely too loose. On the other hand, if you can’t get your shade to stay down, it probably means that the spring is too tight.
Operating Your Roller Shade
If you roll your shade up and it doesn’t stay straight, it is likely that your brackets aren’t mounted level. In that case, you will have to take your brackets down off the wall and make sure to level them out before reinstalling them.
Cleaning You Roller Shades
The beauty of most roller shades is that they are very easy to clean. Simply take a damp cloth or rag and wipe down any dust, dirt, or grime that makes its way onto your shades. Once finished, allow the shade to hang for at least 48 hours or more to minimize the onset of wrinkles.

We highly recommend roller shades for bedrooms, nurseries, or home studios, as they block out light better than most shades out there.
If you like a bit of warm light in your room in the morning, then we highly recommend going with light filtering shades. These shades use much lighter and brighter fabrics, and work really well in living rooms or kitchens.

When it comes to finding the best blackout roller shades, there are a lot of design options to choose from. Beyond the fabric of the blackout roller shades that you choose, you also have to pick between various mounts and lift options.
In our opinion, one of the best blackout roller shades is the cordless, outside-mount blackout roller shade.
Cordless Option
If you’re looking for the cleanest and safest lift option, we highly recommend going with the cordless lift option. Cordless blackout roller shades are incredibly easy to operate, as all you have to do is slightly push down or pull up on the bottom bar to move your shade into place.
Compared to corded roller shades, cordless roller shades offer a clean and crisp look that works great in just about any room, though is especially great for modern decor. You don’t have to deal with the unsightly look of dangling cords, which can do quite a lot for the overall aesthetic.
Lastly, cordless shades are much safer than corded shades, especially if you have a home with young children or pets. Cords pose serious choking hazards when on low-hanging or easy-to-reach window shades. Going cordless gives you peace of mind when letting your little ones run around and play.
Outside Mount
The reason that we recommend outside mounts overs inside mounts when it comes to blackout roller shades is that outside mounts provide total coverage. If you have an inside mount, you will always get a slight bit of light that pours through the edges of the shades.
This light creates a halo effect around the edge of the shade. While this halo can work in certain situations, it defeats the purpose of having a blackout shade, which is to provide total light blockage.
If you have an outside mount, the fabric or material on the shade will cover the entire shade and a piece of the frame, blocking out any potential halo effect.
Blackout Liner
If you choose to go with a lighter color shade, then you should go with a blackout liner on the back. Lighter colors tend to let light flow through more than darker colors. If you want to take full advantage of the blackout effect that blackout roller shades provide, it’s best to either have darker colors, such as black, brown, or navy blue, or lighter colors with a supplemental blackout liner.
